Driving a Quad: which License Needs?

When we talk about Quad we mean a vehicle, or to be more precise a motor quadricycle, which is able to travel on any so-called off-road terrain, in fact it can easily be defined as an ATV (all terrains vehicle, literally translated as “vehicle suitable for any vehicle”). ground”). But what is a Quad according to the Highway Code? And what license is needed to drive it?

What the Highway Code says

Our Road Code has classified the Quads in the L category, to be more precise that to which all motorcycles and tricycles belong, as this particular vehicle is equipped with 4 wheels but does not have a body in the strict sense of the term and, of consequently, the passenger compartment is not present.

The Quad has two evaluation parameters, namely the mass and the amount of weight that can be transported, which allow vehicles to be divided into two categories:

  • light
  • Heavy

More precisely, this means that the type of license required to drive a Quad depends on the maximum speed that the vehicle can reach and above all on its displacement.

Which License Needs to Drive a Quad

As we have seen above and as indicated on Quad Atv Online , it is absolutely impossible to drive a Quad with any type of license, because this vehicle is divided into two distinct categories which consequently also establish its characteristics.

In fact, a Quad classified as light can be safely counted among the common mopeds, as it has:

  • An empty mass that cannot, in any case, exceed 350 kilograms
  • It cannot even exceed a maximum speed of 45 km / h
  • It has a displacement of less than 50 cubic centimeters

So, for all these reasons, if you want to drive this type of Quad, make sure you have an AM license.

Instead, when a Quad is classified as heavy it has:

  • An empty mass, which even in this case, can never exceed 400 kilograms
  • Its maximum speed on the road must necessarily be equal to 80 km / h
  • Its displacement, or if you prefer engine power, must not exceed 15 kw
  • Its maximum load capacity must be within 200 kg (which cannot be exceeded anyway)

Therefore, unless its empty mass does not exceed 500 kilograms, to drive it you need a B1 license as otherwise it would automatically be included in the means of transporting goods and, consequently it would necessarily be necessary to be in possession of the license B. Because, if the empty mass exceeded the aforementioned 500 kilograms, then the Quad, would be counted among the motor vehicles.
